Structure

Four levels of identification exist within the Hyundai Help For Kids Lions Academy:

Future Stars
Squad members are identified primarily from the Academy Future Stars program – boys who play AFL for their primary schools but are not registered with a junior AFL club.

Level One
Squad members are identified primarily from the Queensland State Under 14 Championships, the Queensland State Under 12 School Boy Championships as well as the Rookie Search program.

Level Two
Squad members are identified primarily from the Queensland State Under 14 Championships, the Queensland State Under 15 School Boy Championships as well as the Rookie Search program.

Level Three
Squad members are identified primarily from the Queensland State Under 16 Championships in the previous calendar year as well as the Rookie Search program.

Academy Zones

The AFL has designated clear and distinct Academy zones in Queensland for both the Lions and the newly introduced Gold Coast Suns to operate within.

The zones are not based on a population breakdown but are instead based on the talent outcomes for AFL Queensland for the period 2005 – 2009 years when Queensland had 42 players listed with AFL clubs.

Within the AFL designated Academy zone, there is one major centre – Brisbane (Logan, Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton LGA’s) – and three regional centres – Sunshine Coast (Caloundra to Noosa, Hinterland, Gympie), Darling Downs (Toowoomba, Warwick, Dalby, Goondiwindi, Gatton) and Wide Bay (Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Maryborough).

Levels and Listing Process

Members of the Hyundai Help For Kids Lions Academy program will continue to be nurtured by the Lions until they become eligible for the AFL National Draft, at which time the Club will have the first option of recruiting them to the senior or rookie list.

The drafting process will work in a similar fashion to that of the current Father/Son bidding system. However, the Lions will ultimately have the final say in recruiting their own Academy kids.
