FATHER-DAUGHTER RULE

With the introduction of the AFLW competition, past players are advised that a father-daughter recruiting rule exists.

In short, the daughter/s of any person who has played at least ONE senior game for Fitzroy, the Bears, or the Brisbane Lions, is eligible to be drafted to the Club.

FAMILY TIES

Over the past couple of years, the Brisbane Lions have welcomed a few players who are direct descendants of former players.

Josh Clayton – the son of 1990 Fitzroy Best & Fairest winner Scott Clayton – is approaching his second season in the AFL system after showing some promising signs in the NEAFL last year.

Recent Lions Academy draftee, Ben Keays, also boasts a Fitzroy connection given his great grandfather Fred Keays played five matches with the Club between 1919-20. Furthermore, his father Matt Keays played U19s with Fitzroy.

18-year-old Josh Schache also landed at the Club over the off-season. Josh is the son of former Bears forward, Laurence Schache, who played 29 games in kicked 64 goals in two seasons with Club from 1991-92.

A host of other potential father/sons are coming through the junior ranks and being assessed closely by Club recruiters.

In January 2017, Casey Voss (son of Michael), Jake Bradshaw (son of Daniel), Lachlan Harris (son of Leon), Nick Blakey (son of John) and lachlan and Preston Johnson (sons of Chris), spent time at the Gabba training with the Club's U18 Academy squad.
