When Stefan Martin joins his new teammates for the start of pre-season training next Monday, he will have to adjust not only to a new football environment, but also the relatively foreign surrounds of Brisbane.

Martin - who officially joined the Brisbane Lions on the final day of the AFL’s Trade Period - admits to not having previously spent a lot of time in Queensland’s Capital, but says he is excited about familiarising himself with the city.

“I’m really excited about the fresh start and am looking forward to getting up there and meeting the guys,” Martin told lions.com.au.

“I’ve only really ever been to Brisbane for football (with Melbourne). I remember thinking to myself the last time we played there that I’d like to spend more time in Brisbane. It was during winter and the weather was nice and warm.”

“I got to drive around Brisbane early last week with (GM, Football Operations) Dean (Warren). It’s much smaller than Melbourne, but it looks like a nice city.”

The relocation process will be made a bit easier for Martin, considering former Melbourne teammate, Brent Moloney, was also recruited to the Club during the off-season.

“Brent was one of my best mates at Melbourne, so I’m excited that I can continue playing alongside him,” Martin said.

“Hopefully it makes the transition a lot easier.”

“I’ve also learned in last week that I have some family members and friends living up there.”

With Martin set to undertake a mixture of forward and ruck duties with the Lions next season, it means he will get to work closely with Captain Jonathan Brown throughout the pre-season.

“The plan is to play that ruck/forward position, so hopefully I can learn a few things off guys like Jonathan Brown and Matty Leuenberger,” he said.

“I haven’t met (Brown) yet, but he’s an absolute champion of the game so you couldn’t ask for anyone better to learn the game from.”
