The Brisbane Lions’ rounded out their senior list for 2013 on Thursday night by selecting three teenagers at the 2012 NAB AFL National Draft - South Australian forward/midfielder Sam Mayes (Pick No.8 overall), West Australian utility Marco Paparone (Pick No.23), and Victorian big man Michael Close (Pick No.32).

The trio became the newest members of the Club’s senior list, along with Jack Crisp (Pick No.86) and Niall McKeever (Pick No.99) who were elevated from the rookie list.

For the next few days, discussions will inevitably turn to which club is believed to have performed best at the Draft.

Naturally every club is pleased with their final outcome, although the general public will no doubt formulate their own opinions.

According to the Herald Sun, the “Lions look big winners” having secured the highly rated Mayes with their first selection.

But truth be told, the real ‘winners’ from the Draft probably won’t be known for another 3-4 years.

National Talent Manager Rob Kerr assured fans that the Club ended up getting the players they had originally wanted.

“We came here tonight with those three players in mind,” Kerr said.

“We obviously had back-ups, but they were the three we wanted to walk away with.”

“There was another player we were quite keen on, but there’s only so many picks you can take.”

But as Kerr told lions.com.au before the Draft , it could take time for these players to reach their potential.

"At the end of the day, it will be up to the player to take control of his career and it will most likely be a few years before we get a good read on how that is going to turn out," he said.

Some of the Lions players have flocked to Twitter to welcome their new teammates, who will fly to Brisbane on Sunday in readiness for pre-season training.
