The Aspley Hornets are the only team standing in the way of the Brisbane Lions’ quest for a second straight NEAFL premiership.

Aspley booked themselves into the NEAFL Northern Conference Grand Final with a comfortable 66-point win over Southport at Yeronga on Sunday.

The win sets up a tantalising rematch between the Lions and Hornets, who met only two weeks ago in an epic Semi Final clash.

On that occasion, the Lions came away with a hard-fought two-point win after Aspley held the ascendency for most of the first half.

Lions Reserves Coach Leigh Harding paid close attention to his upcoming opponents on the weekend, and was impressed with their even spread of contributors.

Aspley had 12 separate goal-kickers against the Sharks, six of whom booted multiples.

“It was a really good team performance from Aspley,” Harding told lions.com.au.

“There was probably no real standout for them. It seemed like they worked really hard for each other.”

The on-field responsibility wasn’t left solely to key playmakers Robert Copeland, Nathan Clarke and Cheynee Stiller either, with none of the star trio named in the Hornets’ best players.

Instead, it was the likes of Reece Toye, Declan Bevan, Hutchinson, and Jason Satchell, who led the charge before the game opened up in the second half.

“Their midfield – guys like Toye, Matthews, Conway and Ives – were very dangerous and all played their part.”

“It was a very even contribution and that is their strength. They know their role.”

After finishing ninth last year, the Hornets will head into next Sunday’s NEAFL Grand Final confident that they can turn the tables on the Lions.

But the rested-up Lions will be just as determined to complete their near faultless 2013 NEAFL campaign by delivering more silverware to the Club.

The match-up is a promoter’s dream, with last year’s premiership coach (Clarke) and captain (Stiller) now forming part of the vastly improved opposition who are hell-bent on bringing an end to the Lions’ NEAFL rein.

With the senior team’s campaign now well and truly over, all Brisbane-based Lions fans are being urged to show their support for the team by heading to Yeronga at 1pm this Sunday 15 September.
