Former Fitzroy great and AFL Legend Kevin ‘Bulldog’ Murray might have won a Brownlow Medal and a Club record nine best and fairest awards, but he knows first-hand what it’s like to be at the helm of a struggling team.

Throughout his 333-game VFL career, Murray played in only two Finals matches, and even coached the Club in 34 winless games from 1964 to 1965.

Murray empathised with new Lions Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch, who has suffered five straight losses to start the 2014 season, but firmly believes that success if just around the corner.

“I’ve got no doubt as the year progresses that you’ll see us get some good wins,” Murray told The Courier Mail.

“The boys have just got to keep plugging away and their turn will come. There’s too many good young players on that list for them not to break through eventually.

“Leppa has lost a lot of good players with experience and talent to injury and he’s done the right thing by throwing the kids in.

“They’ve all got to start somewhere and they are being given an opportunity to get some games under their belt.

“The young blokes always bring great enthusiasm and if they can get over the line soon, it will do wonders for their confidence and the wins will come.

“In a season or two they will have 30 or 40 games to their names and you might see us in the finals.”
