Daniel Merrett and Matthew Leuenberger sent a scare through the Brisbane Lions’ camp last weekend, after both looked to have suffered injuries in their respective AFL and NEAFL matches.

Merrett was stretchered off the ground late in the Lions’ win over Collingwood at the MCG with a suspected knee injury, while Leuenberger sat out the second half of the Reserves’ clash with Gold Coast with a sore foot.

Fortunately both have been cleared of any major damage, and may still be available to play this weekend.

“Rog gave us a bit of a fright, staying down the goal square and having to be stretchered off,” Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Hass told Lions TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“He just aggravated an old injury, and gave himself a fright. He felt some discomfort in the knee, so we obviously took it pretty seriously.

“He was taken from the ground, iced-up, and was scanned early this week. All things came back reasonably clear. If he gets through training on Thursday then he’ll be good to go.”

Hass said the Lions took a cautious approach with Leuenberger last weekend given the ruckman’s wretched run of injuries so far in 2014.

“He felt some discomfort in his foot during a ruck contest,” Hass said.

“Again, as a conservative measure, we took him from the field. We had it checked out and there’s nothing too sinister in there. Like Rog, if he gets through the main sessions, he’ll be available for the weekend.”

While the Lions have received some positive news on the injury front, this Sunday’s opponent, Fremantle, have revealed that gun midfielder Michael Barlow will miss the next two games with a broken finger.

Barlow’s injury, couple with the likely absence of partner-in-crime Nat Fyfe through suspension, should give the Lions greater confidence heading into the match.
