In-form Brisbane Lions ruckman Stefan Martin has agreed to a new deal with the Club.

The 27-year-old, has committed to a new two year contract with the Club, which will see him remain a Lion until at least the end of the 2016 season.

Originally taken by Melbourne with their third pick in the 2008 Pre-season Draft, Martin joined the Lions during the 2012 trade period.

After playing in just five of a possible 34 senior matches during his first 18 months in Brisbane, Martin has had an incredible past 11 weeks after long term injuries to Trent West and Matthew Leuenberger gave him an opportunity at senior level.

Since returning to the Lions’ side Martin has averaged 21 disposals, four clearances and 29 hit-outs per game.

Martin has been the form ruckman of the competition since Round 12 and could possibly come under consideration for All Australian selection.

Lions General Manager, Football Operations, Dean Warren, said:

“Stefan has had a remarkable impact on our side since returning to senior footy in Round 12.

“With injuries to Leuenberger and West, Stef was given an opportunity and he has undoubtedly taken hold of it with both hands.

“He’s athleticism and work around the ground is outstanding for someone his size , he has become an extremely important part of our side.

”Earlier this year we all thought Stef’s career was at a cross roads and Stef himself acknowledged his recall as his ‘last chance,’ but he really has earned this new deal and has transformed himself into arguably one of the best ruckman in the competition this season.”
