Lions.com.au contributor Carl Nimb caught up with Club Legend Kevin Murray at the 2014 Club Champion dinner to get the great man's thoughts on the current playing group at the Lions.

Carl Nimb: The Best and Fairest Medal has your name on it. How happy are you with the current crop of Lions at the Club and the 2014 winner Tom Rockliff?

Kevin Murray: We saw 10 young kids on stage earlier tonight and I think that puts the Club in a great position moving forward. It is exciting to think what they can achieve together, especially when you have players like Rockliff showing the way in the middle.

I remember one Best and Fairest dinner when Brad Scott won an award, I can’t remember exactly what it was that he won, and he was out of contract and he implored all the players to sign new contracts and stay together as they were on the cusp of building something special. I think that’s what’s happening here and it’s great.

We heard from some of the Club greats tonight about their time at the Lions. Surely when they spoke of team success and sticking together this would rub off on the younger players in the room?

They all spoke brilliantly and would definitely have an effect. You look at someone like Jonathan Brown who is just a magnificent guy and played footy the way that footy was supposed to be played, without any fear, and his message will resonate with those younger guys.

Would you agree that the Club is well placed when looking into the future?

Absolutely, they have had a taste this year and they now know what is required to play at this level. They will get fitter and stronger and the wins will come.

Did any one of the younger crop stand out above any others to you this year?

Not really, I think they all played well when given the chance. Aish had a pretty good year and you would expect that considering he had already played senior footy in South Australia for the past two years.

Lewis Taylor was great and I was rapt to see Josh Green have a good season. Zorko blossomed this year and that was on the back of the hard work he has put in.

All in all it was a great night and we are all looking forward to 2015 already.
