Brisbane Lions fans will have the unique opportunity to bid on Kevin Murray’s cherished 1966 Bedford J1 truck when it goes up for auction on eBay today (Friday 3 October).

Murray was famously photographed in front of the truck at his Arcadia home back in September 2001, when he featured on the front cover of “The Brownlow” book, but no longer has any practical need for the vehicle.

“I bought it 15 years ago off a farmer in Benalla who used it to transport and sell his sheep,” Murray told lions.com.au.

“I didn’t do a lot of miles in it. I would occasionally drive it to Melbourne, but mostly only really went between here (Arcadia) and Flowerdale. It was helpful as I could bring timber back home to work on the hall.

“But Flowerdale burned down in those bushfires a few years back, so I’m no longer building there. I still do work here and there, but have a trailer and Ute to get most of that done.

“I don’t need the old Bedford like I used to, so there’s no need for me to have the truck just sitting around.”

Interestingly, the three numbers that are displayed on the truck’s number plates read 169, and by pure coincidence, Murray wore the Number 1 Fitzroy guernsey in 1969, which happened to be the same year he won the Brownlow Medal.

“It’s a bit of a fluke that the numbers on the number plate happened to have significance to the year I won the Brownlow. They’re not personalised, it’s just how it worked out,” he said.

Murray, who makes no secret of the fact he’s not overly computer literate, has called in some help to help facilitate the online auction.

“Kyle, who is a friend of mine, will be looking after the sale of the truck. He knows how to go about it all, whereas I’m quite isolated out here,” Murray said.
