AFL commentator David King branded the Brisbane Lions ‘Mozzie Squad’ – made up of Dayne Zorko, Josh Green, and Lewy Taylor – as a “weapon of mass destruction”.

The trio shot to prominence during the 2014 season courtesy of their tireless work across half-forward, and occasionally in the midfield.

Although all three members of the Mozzie Squad stand below 180cm (making them the shortest players at the Club) their impact on the field was significant.

Zorko was arguably the standout, with a career-best season culminating in his finishing Runner-Up to Tom Rockliff in the race for the Merrett-Murray Medal.

Taylor proved a first-year sensation becoming just the fourth player in Club history to receive the AFL Rising Star award, while Green was the Lions’ leading goal-kicker with 33.

In his ‘blueprint’ for the Lions’ future, which appeared in Wednesday’s Herald Sun, King wrote that the Mozzie Squad was a valuable asset for the Club moving forward.

“Dayne Zorko, Josh Green and now Rising Star Lewis Taylor provide much flexibility and forward-half damage, but they will need to improve their goalscoring power to legitimately impose themselves on the competition,” King wrote.

“Only Green kicked more than 20 goals last season.”

And if the Mozzie Squad wasn’t dangerous enough already, they will welcome a new addition in 2015 following the recruitment of Allen Christensen from Geelong, who boasts plenty of similar attributes to the famed trio.

He not only fits the height profile (he stands at 177cm), but can prove just as dangerous around goals as he is in the midfield.

And with the Club’s stock of key forwards still relatively raw, the Mozzie Squad will no doubt take on greater responsibility when it comes to kicking a winning score.
