Lions captain Tom Rockliff can take his game to the next level this season, according to Brisbane legend Simon Black.

Black, Brisbane’s Midfield Coach, said one of Rockliff’s aims in 2015 was to improve on his return of 10 goals last year.

“I’m not sure he can get his hands on the ball more than what he did last year, it was quite amazing,’’ Black told The Courier-Mail.

“I know he’d like to kick more goals this year.

“He set a really, really good standard for himself last year and that (kicking more goals) is the challenge for him to take his game to an even higher level.”

Rockliff had a career-best season last year, earning All-Australian selection and his second Merrett-Murray Medal with a stunning 32.8 disposals a game.

The 25-year-old had 13 outings in which he accumulated more than 30 possessions including 47 disposals against Gold Coast in Round 18 and two 45-disposal efforts against Fremantle.

He also averaged more than five marks and nine tackles a game to catapult himself into the game’s elite midfielders.

“Rocky has shown in the past that he certainly has the skills to go forward and kick a few goals so he’ll get the chance to do that again from time to time throughout the year,’’ said Black.

“As an overall midfield group, we have to kick more goals this year so it is a real focus for all of the boys because it is something we haven’t been able to do for a few years.”

Black said the bolstered Brisbane on-ball division would have to deal with greater expectation and pressure in 2015 after adding the likes of Dayne Beams, Allen Christensen and Mitch Robinson over summer.

The midfield group was challenged by Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch at three-quarter time in the NAB Challenge match against Gold Coast earlier this month.

The Suns midfield had run over their Brisbane rivals in the third term to open up a 23-point lead at the last change but the Lions roared home to snatch a draw.

“Leppa was firm with them. He was certainly assertive,’’ Black said.

“We were really disappointed with the third quarter. We got beaten badly around the ball but the boys fought back and were a large part of the reason why we came back and grabbed a draw.’’
