Young defender Darcy Gardiner and Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne have both copped $1000 fines for wrestling in Sunday’s clash in Perth.

Gardiner and Ballantyne waged a running battle across four quarters as the young Brisbane Lions outfit took it right up to the ladder-leading Dockers.

Gardiner restricted his more-experienced opponent Ballantyne to just one goal, one mark and nine possessions, while collecting 14 touches and three marks himself.

The Match Review Panel found Gardiner could “accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea. A first offence for wrestling is a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable bad record. An early plea can reduce the penalty to a $1000  sanction.”

Ballantyne received exactly the same ruling from the MRP.
