Reserves Match Report: Round 19

Please find below Coach Shane Woewodin’s appraisal on each of the listed Lions who played against the Thunder.

Rohan Bewick

Roh was back with us after being dropped from the seniors. We played him as an inside mid this week, knowing that we were a bit short in that area. He came back with a terrific attitude. At times he played forward. I thought he played a complete game, he had 40 disposals, worked really hard across the ground both inside and outside. He won his fair share of contested footy, which is something I know he’s been working to improve on. He had eight clearances. Considering he’d been playing more outside at senior level, Roh’s a very good inside player at NEAFL. He worked hard both ends of the ground. Finished off his game with a couple of goals. Hopefully he’ll put himself back into senior selection again.

Mitch Golby

Played more wing/back this week. It’s probably more just his decision making and his ability to kick more short options wasn’t his strength on the day. He still worked hard across the ground and ran good patterns. His defensive game was pretty good. He had 28 disposals and probably should have finished off his game by kicking two goals. He missed two opportunities which he probably should have nailed. A consistent performance again that puts him into selection mode this week against the Crows.

Brent Staker

Much improved performance on the previous week. He played inside mid/forward, he had 25 possessions and kicked two goals. He had 10 contested, 15 uncontested and was winning clearances well. He was able to use his big body in and around the contest for us. He played a good role on Tambling at stoppage for us. We got him to tag Tambling and thought he did a great job for us and we were in the game with what he was able to do in that area.

Hugh Beasley

Played key back on Ewing, probably the most dangerous forward in the competition. He did a really good job on him. Hugh was one of our best players, strong in the contest, spoiled the footy all day. He was a bit unlucky on the two goals Ewing kicked but I thought it was a really good performance. It certainly puts himself back into selection mode at that level with his performance. He ran really good offensive patterns also, being able to contribute in that area of the ground. He was terrific for us.

Josh Watts

Much improved performance from Wattsy. He certainly covered the ground better, he ran really good offensive patterns for us as a defender. He had to play tall at times on the weekend on Lockwood a resting ruckman of types. I thought he positioned him well at stoppage and defended OK. Certainly big improvements on the previous week or two with Josh.

Josh Clayton

A mixed bag from Clayto. Much better offensively for us this week. He used the ball better, didn’t put himself into situations where he turned the footy over. Again his offensive patterns as a defender were really good. His GPS results were outstanding again which has been one of his strengths this year. Probably more defensively this week Clayto let himself down. He had a role on a player and didn’t play it enough throughout the day in regard to stoppage positioning and a few defensive elements certainly killed his game in that area. Just needs to probably get the thought process a little bit more defensive first, then start to attack.

Archie Smith

Had his colours lowered on the day, allowed his ruckman to kick three and probably get under his skin a little bit. Probably wasn’t as damaging around the ground than what he has been in previous weeks. His ruck work was OK in and around the ground. His follow up work was pretty good. He probably just got caught in transition a fair bit where he wasn’t able to impact any contests in that area of the ground. We’ll be looking for Archie to bounce back in a fortnight’s time against Redlands.

Matt Hammelmann

Started as a key back. Unfortunately Matty fractured his lower leg early in the first quarter. He was up and about early and was playing some really good footy. We won’t see Matty now for the rest of the season. He had surgery yesterday and we’ll look for him to be back in the pre-season.
