Since the award's inception in 1924, the Lions have won a total of 11 Brownlow Medals - eight as Fitzroy, one as the Brisbane Bears and two as the Brisbane Lions.

On the morning of this year's count, lions.com.au takes a look at three of the Club's most recent winners.

SIMON BLACK (2002)

One of the Lions' most decorated players, Simon Black has achieved almost every honour available to an AFL player and in 2002 established himself as one of the true champions of the game when he won the Brownlow Medal.

Black polled 25 votes to beat Port Adelaide's Josh Francou (21) and skipper Michael Voss (17).

In the same year, Black also won his second consecutive Merrett-Murray Medal and earned All-Australian selection as the Lions went on to win their second premiership of the 2000's.

JASON AKERMANIS (2001)

Polling a total of 23 votes, midfielder Jason Akermanis took home the Brownlow Medal in 2001, receiving maximum votes in five rounds in a season where he averaged 21 disposals and 13 kicks and was named a member of the All Australian Team.

The colourful player was an integral part of the Lions premiership-winning side, kicking 2 goals in the 2001 Grand Final.

MICHAEL VOSS (1996)

Michael Voss won the Brownlow Medal as a Bear alongside Essendon's James Hird in 1996.

In the final year of the Brisbane Bears' existence, where they finished third in the competition, Voss was a standout player who amassed top votes on five separate occasions throughout the Season.

He polled maximum votes in Round 1 (33 disposals, 2 goals), Round 4 (27 disposals, 3 tackles), Round 5 (28 disposals, 2 goals), Round 8 (29 disposals, 6 marks) and Round 20 (27 disposals, 2 goals).

Voss finished the season with a total of 21 votes, alongside Hird and North Melbourne's Corey McKernan, who was ineligible for the award due to a suspension earlier in the year. Voss holds the distinction of being the only recipient of the Brownlow Medal from the Brisbane Bears.

Voss and Hird both went on to captain their respective teams in the 2001 Grand Final – the same year that fellow Lion Jason Akermanis became the first Brownlow Medallist for the Brisbane Lions.

Watch: Quinlan Winning Brownlow

In total, six Fitzroy players have won the Brownlow Medal - Haydn Bunton (1931, 1932, 1935), Wilfred Smallhorn (1933), Denis Ryan (1936), Allan Ruthven (1950), Kevin Murray (1969) and Bernie Quinlan (1981) – reflecting, in particular, Fitzroy's dominance throughout the 1930s.
