Daniel McStay holds plenty of promise for Lions fans, with his strong marking hands and big-bodied presence allowing him to switch between the Club’s defence and forward line.

The 20-year-old, was the mainstay of the Lions’ forward line for much of 2015 , playing as the Club’s key forward.

“It was obviously a pretty tough year for myself playing mainly forward – a bit of a lone hand down there. I played 20 games, they (coaching staff) were pretty happy with that,” McStay told Lions TV following training yesterday.

“Going forward, I’m still going to be a bit of a swingman, I presume.

“I’ll train back and forward, maybe even in the midfield a little bit in the pre-season, continue to work on the game plan and know every role so I can be ready for anything next year.”

McStay played 20 games in 2015, and is using his third full pre-season to add some more bulk to his frame.

“A focus is to build my body up a bit more, build my strength and power.

“I’ve had a bit of back issues so I’ve been working on my Pilates and core and to improve my aerobic base.”

McStay said he has been impressed with ruckman Archie Smith in first week of pre-season. Smith is yet to debut for the Lions.

“Archie’s running really well, he’s looking a lot better than he has in previous years.

“He’s obviously done a lot of work in the off-season, we’re hoping for a big year from him.”
