Trent West returned to the Brisbane Lions’ line-up for the first time since Round 21, 2015 against Melbourne on Sunday.

With injury now behind him, West's impact in the ruck against the Dees was important.

“Westy back in that side was terrific,” Assistant Coach Murray Davis told the Vero Coaches Wrap.

“He had 20 hit-outs, eight to advantage. He worked well in tandem with Stefan Martin and it’s something as a coaching group we’ll look to keep doing as well.”

West, a premiership ruckman with Geelong, underwent a knee reconstruction in 2014. While injury and form plagued much of his 2015 season, West made the most of his opportunity on Sunday.

“Max Gawn (Martin and West’s opponent) has had a terrific season – you’ll see Westy was able to limit Gawn,” said Davis.

“Not only limiting his disposals but also the metres gained – that was really important.

“Westy did a really good job in and around the ground against him.

“It’s great to have the big fella out there and doing some nice things not only in the ruck work but also marking the ball forward as well and creating a shot on goal.”
