NEAFL Wrap: v Redland

NEAFL Wrap: Round 7 Mitch Hahn wraps up the NEAFL Lions Round 7 game.

Brisbane Lions NEAFL Coach Mitch Hahn has lamented the Lions’ disappointing opening term in their loss to Redland at Tidbold Park on Saturday.

After Redland dominated the first quarter – 6.8 to 1.1 – the second and third terms were shoot-outs. The Lions gradually chipped away at the Bombers lead and wrestled the momentum back in their favour.

“Our first quarter was really disappointing. We lacked in a lot of areas,” said Hahn.

“(But) it was pleasing, our ability to fight back and we showed some good spirit. We knew when we came in at quarter time that things hadn’t gone our way but it was really important to fight it out for the next three quarters. We were able to do that and to get within two points was a credit to the players.

“Unfortunately we ran out of gas and a few decisions going forward late in the game and to Redlands credit they were just too good on the day.”

Hahn said although the loss was disappointing some players impressed in their individual efforts – including Matthew Hammelmann who was strong up forward for the Lions.

“He kicked 5.2 which was a great effort. Especially after half time he was able to take some really strong marks on the lead and to be able to convert some scoring opportunities in pretty tough conditions.

“Ryan Bastinac fought hard all day as did Rhys Mathieson.

“A real shining light was Cian Hanley in his third game. He showed some fantastic courage and we were really pleased with the way he went about it. He’s certainly showed some signs that he can be a player for us in the future.

“It’s really exciting for a guy that’s only played three games.”

Despite the loss Brisbane retain 3rd spot on the ladder, they’ll meet the GIANTS at Spotless Stadium this Saturday.
