Young Irishman Cian Hanley has made the most of the opportunities this year following a tumultuous two years out with injury.

Drafted as an international rookie in 2014, Hanley arrived with a ruptured ACL before succumbing to another setback in his second season with groin problems.

This year, the halfback has managed to lock down consistent games and just this weekend, Hanley kicked his first ever AFL goal.

“I’ve played in 10 games straight now, with three whole games in there, so now I’m back to playing full time,” said Hanley.

With his first two years at the Club on the sidelines, his older brother Pearce Hanley moving to the Gold Coast and the loss of his younger brother earlier this year, Hanley has had his fair share and says he only has the club to thank.

“The boys have been unreal,” said Hanley.

“Obviously there have been some tough times through injury, and off field things, but the support has been unreal – I’ve enjoyed myself and I’m really happy.”

“Being injured for the first two years wasn’t great but now that I’m playing, it’s a good chance to repay the faith that the Lions have put in me, and a chance also to say thanks for sticking with me.

“They picked me up from Gaelic footy, not knowing whether I’ll be able to transfer and two years of being injured now – I have a chance to play consistently now and I’m very appreciative.”

The NEAFL side take on the Aspley Hornets (Graham Rd) in Round 15 this Saturday July 8 from 1.30pm.
