Brisbane Lions Ruck and Midfield Coach Ben Hudson says the side showed flashes of attacking brilliance against the Western Bulldogs but were unable to perform consistently over the four quarters.

The Lions fought back from a 24-point deficit at the end of the first term to take the lead over the defending premiers in the third stanza.

“We were able to claw our way back over time and hit the lead. The belief of the boys was still strong going into that last quarter but ultimately we just couldn’t get the chocolates,” Hudson said.

“I think it came back to that eight minutes in the first quarter, in red time."

Ryan Bastinac’s individual efforts kept the Lions in the hunt in the dying stages.

“Basti” kicked two crucial late goals and had 18 disposals for the afternoon. Hudson has been pleased by his progress this season.

“To Ryan’s credit he spent a bit of time earlier in the year in the NEAFL and worked on things the coaching staff put to him. To his credit he’s put in a couple of really good performances.”

This week ahead of the hotly-anticipated Q-Clash the side will focus on creating more attacking opportunities.

“We had our chances. We went at 65% at scores inside 50, which is an excellent result, but we probably couldn’t get in there enough,” he said.

The Lions are aiming for consecutive Q-Clash victories in 2017 on the back of a turbulent week for the Gold Coast Suns.

“I don’t think there’s any real secret to it. We can’t control what happens down the highway. We’ve just got to make sure we bring that effort which we did probably in the second and third quarter against the Dogs,” Hudson said.

The fan question of the week came from Scott, who asked Hudson about the Lions improved efforts late in games.

"I think the maturity of our group ... has allowed us to become a stronger unit," Hudson said.

"As a group, we have looked at getting marginal gains, and looking at the times we train was something we looked at."
