Brisbane Lions Strategy Coach Danny Daly revealed to RadioTAB how he almost fell out of love with the game he’s dedicated his life to.

Daly admitted the first few years in Brisbane were tough and that it was heartbreaking watching on as players struggled.

“It was a really hard couple of years. It was really hard. Despite the efforts of trying to coach as best as you can, it’s really hard watching the players walk into the Club with their heads down and not enjoying the footy,” he said.

“I was half falling out of love with the game.”

Daly says the 2017 season has been reinvigorating. New staff and players have injected a fresh energy amongst the Club.

“It’s amazing to sit back and even during the week in our office where we are, I was reflecting on this time last year and how hard it was,” he said.

“It’s given me personally great satisfaction in what I’m doing with some of our playing group this year…It’s been a huge relief for me personally.”

Daly says the right people have been tasked for the job this year.

Senior Coach Chris Fagan has turned the Club’s attitude around but Daly says General Manger of Football David Noble in an unsung hero.

“Behind the scenes he’s done an enormous amount of work. He’s obviously been a great support for Fages [Chris Fagan]. But he’s also been a great support for the playing group.”

The Club are determined to end their season on a high with a win against the North Melbourne Kangaroos on Saturday.

Daly has been busy researching their opposition this week, as the Lions have not played the Kangaroos since Round 2, 2016.

“It’s been a long time: forty games. So a lot’s changed from North Melbourne. A lot’s changed from us. I think both clubs are going in a bit with a little bit of the unknown.”
