Brisbane Lions AFLW defender Samantha Virgo will miss the upcoming 2018 season after scans confirmed she has ruptured her ACL in her left knee.

Virgo was outstanding for the Yeronga South-Brisbane Devils in their winning QWAFL Grand Final on Sunday afternoon.

In the dying minutes, she fell to the ground and needed to be stretchered off the field.

Virgo played every game for Brisbane in their inaugural AFLW season and was named as an All-Australian at the conclusion.

She was expected to play for the Allies’ in this weekend’s AFLW State of Origin in Melbourne.

Lions CEO Breanna Brock was devastated by the news.

“She’s an integral part of our team and a leader for our Club,” Brock said.

“We’ll look to support her during this difficult time.”

Virgo will move onto Brisbane’s long-term injury list.
