Brisbane Lions’ AFLW Captain Emma Zielke is humbled to be appointed vice-captain of the Allies’ in Saturday night’s inaugural State of Origin match in Melbourne.

Allies’ and Adelaide Coach Bec Goddard appointed Zielke, with Crows’ Chelsea Randall named Captain for Victoria.

“I was pretty honoured for her to give me the call up and ask if I wanted to take that role. It’s just going to be exciting to be around that much talent,” Zielke said.

The way in which Goddard asked, endeared Zielke to her one-off coach.

“She sent me a text, it was a pretty funny text. It was like off The Bachelor, ‘will you accept this rose?’ and in brackets ‘vice-captaincy.’  It was pretty funny,” she said.

The Allies’ will train together for the first time in Melbourne tomorrow, before Saturday’s night’s bounce at Etihad Stadium.

Seven Lions’ players will take to the field in the inaugural match, including Emily Bates, Sabrina Frederick-Traub, Jess Wuetschner, Kate McCarthy and Leah Kaslar. Kaitlyn Ashmore will play for Victoria.

“It will be nice to play some really good footy with some really good players. I’m pretty excited about that,” Zielke said.

“It will be very skillful. It will be exciting to watch. It will be very fast-paced. I guess because we’ve all been in local league at the moment, the standard will be so much higher.”

The Lions players fly out of Brisbane today.
