Senior Coach Chris Fagan believes the Lions have a lot to look forward to as they enter the AFL Trade, Draft and Free Agency Period of 2017.

This morning Fagan joined the RSN Breakfast Club to discuss the possibility of retired Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge joining the Club next year.

“If he [Hodge] decides to come up to Brisbane, it’d be a huge help to us as we try and grow and develop as a team,” Fagan said.

With such a young list of players, Fagan alongside List Managers and Recruiters, is looking to solidify opportunities for on-field leaders and coaches next season.

“Our list at the start of last season was a full year younger than the next youngest list in the AFL, which is a massive outlying statistic,” Fagan said.

“We don’t have too many experienced senior players who can coach the boys out on the oval and that’s the best place to learn.”

Hodge’s move to Brisbane appears likely to go ahead, but Fagan is certain that Hodge’s role in a leadership position on-field would be influential to the Club’s growth going forward.

“He can still play a solid role for the team, but his value as an assistant coach on the field would be unbelievable.”

In other news, Fagan spoke fondly of Tom Rockliff’s honesty regarding his decision to remain a restricted free agent ahead of the upcoming trade period.

“Footy has changed, players are allowed to do that now and clubs have always been able to move players on, we just have to accept that,” Fagan said.

The AFL Restricted Free Agency Offer period will open this Friday, 6 October 2017.

With Port Adelaide interested in putting an offer on the table to Rockliff, the Lions will have the opportunity to match the offer.

“Tom has been pretty honest… he said to me, as a free agent he wanted to explore the market,” Fagan said.

“We don’t know what that [the offer] is at this point in time, we’ll just see and make a decision later in the week or early next week on how that will roll.”
