Dayne Beams will once again captain the Brisbane Lions in 2018 after being chosen by the playing group for a second consecutive year.

The decision by the players to nominate the 27-year-old, who capped off a successful 2017 with a top-10 finish in the Brownlow Medal, was then ratified by the coaching group.

2017 All-Australian Dayne Zorko was voted in as vice-captain.

Zorko, a deputy vice-captain in 2016, replaces Tom Rockliff, who departed the Club via free agency in October.

Emerging defender Harris Andrews has been promoted from the leadership group to replace Zorko as deputy vice-captain.

The remainder of the 2017 leadership group returns for 2018 including Stefan Martin, Ryan Lester and Allen Christensen.

“I couldn’t be more happy to lead the group in 2018,” Beams said.

“Last year was a good learning experience for me. Twelve months later and I’m still really excited and enthusiastic about what this team can achieve.”

Senior Coach Chris Fagan said it was a vote of confidence in Beams’ first year as captain.

“Dayne Beams has been a driving force in living and breathing the Club’s values & player trademarks since being installed as captain last year, and you can see the impact he has had on the football department as a whole,” Fagan said.

Fagan was equally as excited for Dayne Zorko’s promotion to vice-captain.

“After having such a successful season on-field last year, this is reward for effort for ‘Zorks’ in his off-field attitude as well," Fagan said.

"Having recently played for Australia and been around the best players in the game, we know he will bring that strong work ethic and resilience to our group.

“Harris Andrews was a natural selection as deputy vice-captain. A player that displays leadership beyond his youth, his on-field leadership with the backline is equally as evident in his off-field work.

“Finally, the addition of Luke Hodge to our list will be very important to these young men. While he may not be officially part of the leadership group, he is there to be called upon if needed.

“The remaining group all bring their own strengths to round out an extremely capable group of leaders. Stef, Ryan and Allen all contributed mightily in 2017, and I look forward to the impact they will have on the group in 2018.”
