An impressive effort around clearances and in contested ball helped the Brisbane Lions’ NEAFL side to a massive 50-point victory over the Sydney Swans last Saturday.

Head of Development Scott Borlace was pleased with the performance and how the team bounced back from a tough Round 1 defeat.

“A couple of key stat areas that are really important against the Swans are contested possessions and clearances,” Borlace said.

“We won clearances by 15 and contested possessions by 29.

“Against a team like Sydney that prides itself on that, we know if we are doing that well we are going to have a good result.”

The Lions had 13 different goal kickers on the day and eight players who finished with 20 disposals or more.

Tom Bell, Ryan Lester and Claye Beams were impressive out of the experienced players, while Corey Lyons, Jacob Allison and Cedric Cox were the best of the emerging players.

“Ryan [Lester] was fantastic and his attitude was fantastic. He was a real leader amongst our team,” Borlace said.

“He helped some of the younger players in the team and made them better players.

“A lot of our midfielders got forward and kicked goals on the weekend. That’s really important for our team’s success.”

The Lions take on the Suns this Sunday at South Pine Sports Complex at 12pm and Borlace is expecting a tough match.

“We tend to struggle a little bit against the Gold Coast.”

“They are always really tough matches for us. We’ve got some strategies we will take into the game we learnt from last time we played them."
