On Tuesday, the Brisbane Lions will launch their 24-hour Lions in the Community Give-A-Thon where they will aim to raise $100,000 for their community programs.

Everything the Community department do is centred around their four pillars – Grassroots, Multicultural, Indigenous and Female.

Here are just some of the initiatives they are currently running in this space:

Grassroots

  • ‘Lions in your Club’ program which currently impacts 30,000 kids, coaches, volunteers and parents across the state. The Lions actively give back and help Clubs be sustainable. Included in this program are Community Coaching Masterclasses. The Lions’ elite coaches and staff regularly meet to lend their experience to eager coaches and stuff in the community
  • More than 800 kids who play Aussie Rules have received a free Under 9 Brisbane Lions guernsey, presented to them by the entire AFL playing list

Multicultural

  • The Club held their first citizenship ceremony before an AFL match at the Gabba last year. This was a wonderful opportunity to welcome our newest citizens to our great game and Club
  • The Lions sponsor breakfast for Students at Watson Road State School in Acacia Ridge, a highly diverse multicultural school. Breakfast each day drives attendance and gives students the stamina to concentrate for a full day of school. Players and Lions staff have gone out to the school a number of times to meet the students, serve them breakfast and play some football before school

Indigenous

  • The Club holds the only other Long Walk outside of Dreamtime at the MCG each year. This is a great relationship builder with the indigenous community here in South East Queensland. This year’s walk, held before Round 12’s clash with Essendon, had more than 200 participants
  • Partnership with Deadly Choices which encourages indigenous youth to get regular health check.

Female

  • Leadership programs run across schools in Queensland encouraging girls in Grades 7-10 to develop strong self-esteem and healthy lifestyles, just like our AFLW players

To show your support for the Lions community programs, make a donation for our Lions in the Community 24 hour Give-A-Thon next Tuesday.

As the Club hits milestones throughout the day, vulnerable clubs across Queensland will be rewarded with prizes that will be sure to give them a boost.

Remember, a donation of $2 or more is tax deductible.
