A GWS Giants outfit at their attacking best was too much for the Brisbane Lions NEAFL side to handle on Saturday, going down 18.3 (111) to 22.14 (146).

“We know the type of game that the Giants like to play – they are a fast, running side that like to start their offence from the back half,” Head of Development Scott Borlace said.

“We didn’t want the game to open up like it did…to concede 140 points, we were very disappointed with that.

“Our offence was really good. We are able to kick seven goals from our back half ball movement which we were happy with.”

For the first time this year, the Lions played at the Gabba before the Senior side.

“The boys in the rooms pre-game were really up and about and bubbly," Borlace said.

“It was a fantastic experience for some of our young players who haven’t played on the Gabba yet.”

The match was notable for Sam Skinner's comeback from a third knee reconstruction and draftee Toby Wooller's NEAFL debut.

“Sam was good. It’s an amazing story to come back from a third knee reconstruction and to do it with the attitude that he does," Borlace said.

“He’s such a positive influence around the Club. For him to get through and contribute to the team was fantastic. He is super aggressive and we love having him out there.

“We really like what we see with Toby. He kicked two goals and he is a really natural forward.

“We are looking forward to seeing what he can produce in the back half of the year.”

Claye Beams was a standout for the Lions on Saturday, collecting 31 disposals and kicking four goals.

“What we love about Claye is his leadership and how he brings others into the game," Borlace said.

“He wasn’t thinking about himself but he contributed really well to the team.”

The Lions play the Sydney Swans this Saturday at the Blacktown International Sports Centre in Sydney. The match will be live-streamed on lions.com.au.
