Lions midfielder Tom Rockliff has capped off an impressive second AFL season by finishing third in the 2010 NAB AFL Rising Star award.
Rockliff polled 24 votes to finish behind eventual winner Daniel Hannebery (45 votes) from the Sydney Swans and Melbourne’s number one pick in last year’s National Draft Tom Scully (35 votes).
Like Daniel Rich last year, Hannebery received the maximum 45 votes from the selection panel to become just the third person in history to be unanimously voted as the NAB AFL Rising Star.
After playing just one senior game in his debut season last year, Rockliff was one of the Lions’ most improved players in 2010.
He played 19 matches and averaged 22.8 disposals per game this season - the fourth highest at the Club - including a career-high 31 disposals against Geelong at Skilled Stadium back in Round 17.
Rockliff was joined at today’s event in Melbourne by fellow Club nominees Todd Banfield and Jack Redden who were unlucky not to receive a single vote from the judges despite playing in every Lions match this year.
Banfield proved a valuable small forward for the Lions in 2010, ranking third at the Club - and equal 32nd in the AFL - in total goals this season with 27.
Redden, meanwhile, took on greater responsibility in the midfield this season and averaged a career-best 17.5 disposals per game. The tough 19 year-old also led the Club in total tackles this season.
The NAB AFL Rising Star was voted by the All-Australian selection panel of Andrew Demetriou, Adrian Anderson, Mark Ricciuto, Kevin Bartlett, James Hird, Gerard Healy, Glen Jakovich, Robert Walls and Kevin Sheehan (Rising Star selector only).
