Introduction

James Aish is a silky-skilled midfielder who was drafted to the Lions with Pick No.7 at the 2013 NAB AFL National Draft. He was a prodigious talent as a junior renowned for making good decisions and using the ball well, and has slotted seamlessly into the Club's exciting young midfield brigade.

Background

• Aish was born into South Australian football royalty. He is the son of former Norwood midfielder Andrew Aish, the nephew of 1981 Magarey Medallist Michael Aish, and the grandson of former Redlegs skipper Peter Aish.

• Aish himself made SANFL history by becoming the youngest Norwood player in 134 years to debut at league level. He was just 16 years of age.

• Starting from such a young age, Aish learned what it's like to play against bigger bodies, and proved a valuable member of Norwood's 2012 and 2013 SANFL premierships.

• Recruitment managers quickly took notice of Aish, with his disposal efficiency on both sides of the body and his ability in heavy traffic among the key features of his game.

• He represented South Australia in both the 2012 and 2013 U18 National Championships, and earned All Australian selection in each of those years.

• He was touted as a potential 'Top 3' selection prior to the AFL National Draft, but ended up slipping to Pick No.7, where the Lions showed no hesitation in reading his name out. His AFL journey had just begun.

Season by Season

Season by Season

• As many predicted, Aish made an immediate impact at the Lions, collecting 17 disposals in the side's season-opener against reigning Premiers Hawthorn in Launceston.

• Aish was used in a variety of roles, but spend most of his time in the midfield. He also proved that he was far more than an 'outside' player, and thrived on winning the contested ball when thrown into the engine room.

• He collected a season-high 25 disposals (including 12 contested), laid four tackles and kicked a goal in Round 6 against St Kilda, which not only helped the Lions secure their first win of the season, but also earned him an AFL Rising Star Nomination.

• He went on to play in all but one of the team's 21 senior matches (he was rested from the Lions' Round 14 clash against Fremantle in Perth) and collected 20 or more disposals on nine occasions.

• Aish ranked 6th at the Club in total disposals (370), 4th in marks (94), 5th in tackles (77), and 7th in clearances (43).

• His stunning debut season was recognised when he finished fourth in the NAB AFL Rising Star award - behind fellow young gun and Lions teammate Lewy Taylor who claimed the top honour - and ninth in his maiden Merrett-Murray Medal count.
