Introduction

He might be the Lions' shortest player at just 173cm, but what Lewis Taylor lacks in size, he more than makes up for in on-field ability. The former Geelong Falcon is a powerful, quick and skilful midfielder, who proved to be one of the steals of the 2013 AFL National Draft.

Background

• Lewis Taylor was identified relatively early as one of the AFL's top draft prospects, following a stellar junior career which included selection in the AIS-AFL Academy squad and him being named Captain of the VIC Country side in the 2013 U18 National Championships.

• He elevated himself into high-end draft contention with a superb Championships, where he averaged 25 disposals while operating at 78 per cent disposal efficiency rate; an effort which saw him claim All Australian honours.

• Unfortunately a cracked bone in his foot prematurely ended his final season with TAC Cup side the Geelong Falcons.

• After being likened to North Melbourne superstar Brent 'Boomer' Harvey and having Talent Manager Michael Turner claim he was "as good as any player" to come through the Falcons system, a great deal of hype surrounded Taylor and he was expected to get picked up early in the first round - possibly even inside the top 10.

• As a likely round one selection, he was one of only a few prospects invited to attend the AFL National Draft on the Gold Coast, but proved one of the meeting's big sliders.

• The Lions couldn't believe their luck when Taylor was still available with their fourth selection (Pick No.28) overall, so had no hesitation in calling out his name. Although he might not have been part of their initial Draft plans, he was simply too good a player to pass up at Pick No.28.

Season by Season

Season by Season

• The Lions selected key defender Darcy Gardiner and lightning quick midfielder Lewis Taylor, both from the Geelong Falcons, in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft.

• Lewis Taylor was ranked in the top 4 for over 10 of the rising star achievements including 2nd in total kicks and disposals and otal uncontested possessions.

• Taylor’s resilience and determination paid off as he was crowned the 2014 AFL Rising Star is the closest count ever. He polled 39 votes, one more than the Western Bulldogs' Marcus Bontempelli, to win the Ron Evans medal.

• Taylor had a phenomenal year finishing off with 22 games and averaged 17 disposals for the season and kicking 12 goals.
