Introduction

Sam Michael is a power forward, an occasional hard-working defender, who can also provide some relief in the ruck. He is very strong overhead and super competitive. He was an AIS/AFL Academy graduate and represented Queensland U18s in both 2010 and 2011.

Background

• Local Queenslander Sam Michael was born in Brisbane, but moved to Cairns aged six months and enjoyed an exciting all-sports background in North Queensland.

• He moved back to Brisbane in January 2010 and burst onto the AFL scene with a stellar first season with Redland Bombers in the local QAFL competition.

• He played a key role in Queensland’s U18 side in the National Championships, and was one of only 30 junior players to earn selection into the 2010 AIS/AFL Academy. It was the same squad intake as highly rated draftees Matthew Buntine, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Stephen Coniglio and Jaeger O’Meara.

• He went into 2011 as one of the State’s brightest prospects and was invited to join the Gold Coast Suns’ pre-season training where he relished the chance to work alongside full-time professionals.

• A tour of Europe with the AIS-AFL Academy - coupled with his Queensland U18 commitments - meant that Michael only played with Redland towards the end of the 2011 season, but still proved a key member of their reserves Premiership side.

• He also gained some valuable senior NEAFL experience with the Bombers - earning a Rising Star nomination for his efforts in Round 19 against Mt Gravatt. His game against the Vultures replicated his best afield effort for the Scorpions in their breakthrough win over the NT Thunder in the U18 Championships

• Michael ended up polling a total of 10 votes in the NEAFL Rising Star Award, to finish equal 7th overall.

• Michael was ultimately recruited to the Lions with Queensland Priority Selection (Pick No.96 overall) at the 2011 AFL Rookie Draft.

Season by Season

Season by Season

Michael continued to ply his trade with the Lions Reserves side, and his size and versatility proved useful for the side.

• He played mainly as a key defender in the early stages of the season, but was also moved up forward and into the ruck on occasion.

• He was named in the Northern Conference U21 State Squad, and was part of the team that comfortably defeated the Eastern Conference U21s.

• A move to the forward/ruck role towards the end of the season saw him blossom even further – with standout performances against Gold Coast Reserves, Southport and NT Thunder helping lift the Lions to their first State League Grand Final in 11 years.

• Michael was part of the Reserves’ 2012 NEAFL Premiership side, and received the Andrew Ireland Medal as best-on-ground the following week against Eastern Conference Premiers Queanbeyan in the Inter-Conference Championship.
