Introduction

Hugh Beasley is a key defender with a real appetite for negating his opponent. At 190cm, he is on the slightly shorter side for his position, but over the past two years has shown he can mix it with the genuine giants. Last year he restricted Tom Boyd to one goal and in 2014 he was excellent against top-five draft prospects Paddy McCartin and Peter Wright. Rarely beaten in one-on-one contests, he has great closing speed. He is also agile enough to play on medium forwards.

Background

• Hugh Beasley is a key defender with his competitiveness allowing him to play tall whilst his agility gives him the versatility to match it with medium forwards as well.

• He is rarely beaten in one on one contests with his closing speed highlighted by a 2.86sec time over 20m at the AFL Draft Combine.

• He also has a strong hockey background with some of the skills learnt with the stick able to be applied to his defensive game adding to his ability to read the play.

• Beasley was recruited by the Lions with the Club's 2nd selection in the AFL Rookie Draft, pick 22 overall.

Season By Season

Season By Season

• In his first season at the Club, mature-age rookie Hugh Beasley made a big impression.

• Carrying a big frame (developed through a period in the VFL), Beasley was able to slot comfortably into the Lions' backline during the season.

• Making his debut in Round 10 against GWS, Beasley went on to play six matches.

• Two of his better showings came against the Crows in Round 13 and against Fremantle in Round 14, where Beasley held his own against some of the league’s best forwards.
