Introduction

Matthew Hammelmann is a tall forward with strong hands in front, on the lead and overhead. He has good pace off the mark to get separation on his opponent. Hammelmann showed his athletic ability, finishing equal-seventh in the running vertical jump (87cm) at the NAB AFL Draft Combine. He was also a member of the NAB AFL Academy and Lions Academy.

• He represented Queensland and showed promise in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 10 disposals, seven marks and two goals in three matches.

Hammelmann made his debut against Richmond in Round 14 and displayed his potential as yet another addition to the exciting brigade of young Lions big men.

Standing at 197cm tall, the Morningside product proved himself in defence, playing against far more experienced opponents. He displayed strong hands while averaging 7.3 disposals a game.
