Steve Wrigley is a running defender who reads the game well and has good endurance (he recorded a 14.2 Beep Test at State Draft Combine). He is a relative late bloomer, but has risen through the AFL ranks since moving from Victoria to Queensland at the end of 2009.
• Stephen Wrigley started more as a social footballer, playing with friends at Blackburn in Melbourne’s Eastern Football League, before really deciding to focus on developing himself into a potential AFL footballer.
• He moved to Queensland at the end of 2009 and joined QAFL side Labrador. In his first season with the Tigers in 2010, he finished Runner-Up in their Best & Fairest award and was named in the QAFL Team of the Year.
• He improved further in 2011, and polled 83 votes to win Labrador’s Best & Fairest Award. Wrigley was also named in the NEAFL Team of the Year for the second consecutive season.
• Despite being a relative late-bloomer, he was invited to attend the 2011 AFL Draft Combine where he impressed Lions recruiters. He was eventually invited to train with the club at the beginning of their 2012 pre-season campaign.
• He attracted interest from the Lions and was eventually recruited with the Club's second selection (Pick No.22 overall) at the 2011 AFL Rookie Draft.
• No stranger to the NEAFL competition, Wrigley slotted in perfectly to the Lions Reserves’ line-up and provided the side with great run and carry off half-back.
• He was clearly among the best running defenders in the State League competition, so it came as no surprise to see him named in the Queensland/NT State side that faced off against the best of the Eastern Conference. He earned plaudits from the State coach for his efforts in the 150-point demolition.
• His impressive form was rewarded late in the season when he was nominated as the Club’s mid-season rookie elevation, and he was immediately called upon to play seniors.
• Wrigley went on to play three consecutive senior games between Rounds 18-20, unfortunately without tasting success.
• He returned to the Reserves in time for their Finals campaign which culminated in both the 2012 NEAFL Premiership and Inter-Conference Championship.
• Wrigley was also one of only three Lions players to be named in the 2012 NEAFL Team of the Year It was his third straight appearance in the best team from the State League.
