Introduction

Cutler is a 190cm  utility who has the capacity to play just about anywhere, but spent most of his junior years as a third tall defender. Known for his good game sense and intelligence, he generally makes smart decisions and is equipped with good skills by hand and foot.

 

Background

• Cutler was highly rated as an underage player, but ended up missing a large part of 2013 due to a nagging ankle injury

• He managed just one game for the Oakleigh Charges in the TAC Cup competition, and played two games for VIC Country at the 2013 National U18 Championships, where he averaged 13 disposals and four marks. 

• At the 2013 AFL Draft Combine, his athleticism was on display when he ranked 8th in the 20-metre sprint with a time of 2.93 seconds. 

• Despite missing most of 2013, Cutler remained a hot prospect among recruiters, with the Lions ultimately taking him with Pick No.33 at the 2013 AFL National Draft.

• His best game was in the Lions' 57-point victory over Fremantle, kicking a career-high three goals and grabbing a season-high ten marks.

• The 22-year-old’s great hand and foot skills throughout the Round 12 match secured Cutler Player of the Round honours.

• After an impressive 2015, Tom Cutler entered 2016 in full force but faced injury setbacks with a dislocated shoulder in Round 5 against the Western Bulldogs.

• He returned in Round 10 against Hawthorn and was instrumental in helping snap the Season’s 12-game losing streak, kicking two goals in Round 18 against Essendon.

• Despite his setbacks, the 21-year-old averaged 18.5 disposals and career highs of 13 marks and 2 goals.

• The 190cm tall utility took home the Marcus Ashcroft award for Most Professional Player in 2016.

• Tom Cutler made big strides in his development in 2015, often being used for his run off half-back, as well as for his speed through the wing and midfield.

• He gathered a career-high 32 disposals against West Coast in Round 4, and had 28 touches against the Bulldogs late in the season.

• In his first year at the Lions Cutler played seven games, averaging 12 disposals, including a high of 21 against Richmond in round five. 

• The young defender was ranked number 1 among the rising starts in bounces per game in the 2014 season. 

• Cutler struggled with a groin injury early in the year before undergoing surgery on a minor knee injury in August, which saw him miss the remainder of the season. 

• Tom Cutler was deemed an important for the future of the club after quickly settling into the Brisbane lifestyle since moving from Melbourne.
