Two Brisbane Lions Academy members have been selected in the 2022 NAB AFL and AFLW Academy Squad, announced by the AFL on Friday.

Jaspa Fletcher and Ella Smith are among a selection of the best 17-year-olds across the country who will participate in the accelerated Australian Football and personal development program.

Speaking on the pair, Brisbane Lions Academy Coach, Zane Littlejohn said that the duo’s selection is a reflection of their dedication and commitment to football.

“Ella is no stranger to elite programs having already represented Australia in doubles rowing,” Littlejohn said.

“She represented the Academy last season being eligible for both the U19 and U17 program and displays a high degree of professionalism and leads by her actions amongst the Level 3 Lions Academy group.

“Jaspa was part of our U19 Lions Academy last year at the age of 17 and showed great leadership qualities through this program.

“He then went on to play for Queensland under 19s against Tasmania in the later part of the year, and this showcased the hard work and dedication he has put into his football so far.”

Fletcher, son of former Lions player and Coach, Adrian Fletcher, is currently training with the Brisbane Lions AFL program over summer as part of the Club’s Father Son program.

Will Ashcroft, son of Lions Triple Premiership player Marcus Ashcroft, was also selected in the squad.

This is the 25th annual intake of boys and the fifth intake of girls, with both squads having players representing every State and Territory across Australia.

The induction program is scheduled to be held in January 2022 with players set to experience the AFL and AFLW environments early next year with training sessions at AFL and AFLW Clubs.
