The Brisbane Lions have chalked up their third win of the season with a 59-point decimation of Sydney at the SCG.

The Lions took charge of the game right from the start, kicking seven unanswered goals in the first 18 minutes to set themselves up for success from the get-go.

A surge from Sydney early in the third term brought the score to just seven points, before the Lions stormed home with six goals to Sydney’s one in the fourth quarter to secure their first win on the road this season.

Rhys Mathieson continued his run of stellar form with another powerhouse effort on Sunday to finish with 31 disposals, 11 clearances, six inside 50s, six tackles, and a goal.

Deven Robertson and Tom Berry showed physicality in the contest, with the pair getting plenty of the footy all while still damaging on the scoreboard with two goals each.

Hard nut Mitch Robinson dominated with 28 disposals, 10 inside 50s, nine marks and one goal in his first State League game in nine years.

After bagging three goals last week young forward Blake Coleman backed up to produce another three from eight touches on Sunday. Nakia Cockatoo also kicked three goals.

Brisbane father-son prospect Will Ashcroft built on his strong start to the season in the NAB League with a superb VFL debut that saw him gather 24 disposals, nine tackles, six inside 50s, and five marks.

Speaking on Sunday’s result, VFL Head Coach Mitch Hahn said he was proud of the teams effort, especially their attack in the first quarter.

“We really wanted to get the Club off to a good start to the day on the SCG,” Hahn said.

“It was an unbelievable start to the game and the second quarter was a good learning experience for our group, particularly on how to stem the flow of attack when the opposition is challenging you.

“But the really pleasing part out of Sunday was the response after half time and how we finished the game. The numbers speak for themselves, but to make 6.5 to 1.3 in the fourth quarter was really encouraging from the group.

“To be able to deliver such a good result with a really strong team contribution across the board is great to see at this point in the season, and it shows that we can get those wins on the road when we get our preparation and attitude right.”
