Brent Staker announced his retirement in front of the Brisbane Lions playing group in August after 13 years on the field and 160 games. The key position player began his career at the West Coast Eagles in 2003, where he played 110 games and kicked 84 goals.

Staker was traded to Brisbane in 2009, and despite a wretched run with injury, remained a valuable member of the Lions’ side – his versatility enabling him to play at either end of the ground.

Reflecting on his career at the Lions’ Club Champion Awards in September, Staker said:

“What is a fairytale, really?

“I think the career I’ve had for me has been a fairytale.

“I did say that I loved every minute, and I wouldn’t change anything in the world, but I would’ve changed two knee constructions… a hamstring, a calf, all these things,” Staker said.

“Obviously it’s made me who I am.

“I think you grow from it, but it’s quite scary when you’re playing footy and get injured like that.

“It’s been a hell of a ride.”
