The Brisbane Lions have appointed Breeanna Brock to the position of Women’s Chief Executive Officer.

Brock was a standout candidate for the position through her work with AFL Queensland, building and driving their Female Football Programs.

She will take on full responsibility for the running of the Lions’ new Women’s Team after the Club was yesterday named as one of eight teams to win an inaugural licence for the AFL National Women’s League Season in 2017.

The Lions’ successful bid was based around the theme of “GAME CHANGER”, focused on how the Club’s commitment to a women’s team would change the face of women’s sport across the state and nation.

The Lions already have the commitment of young star Tayla Harris – one of the most exciting players in the women’s game.

Brock, who will sit on the Club’s Executive Management Team and report directly to CEO Greg Swann, said she could not wait to get started in her new role next Monday.

“It’s a huge honour and a huge responsibility – we have to get this right for future generations of girls so that they can play the game they love,” said Brock.

“To be given a senior role so early on in the competition is such a fantastic opportunity, I want to be able to help push women through the glass ceiling of professional sport – the AFL has been really forward thinking in their approach to this.

“Looking forward to Round 1, there’s a fair chunk of work that’s got to be done in the background – we’ll need to build a list, build the staff and sponsorship and all those things.

“But it is exciting that our Queensland girls have the opportunity to play AFL football and stay in their home state. They’ve really got something to aspire to now.”

Swann added: “Bree is an outstanding football administrator and she was the standout applicant for the position when we went to market.

“Everyone at the Club is looking forward to the vast footy knowledge and expertise she brings to the role.

“The Women’s Team is a major focus for the Club and having Bree in place is a crucial ingredient to making it a success.”
