The Brisbane Lions Women’s team has finalised its coaching structure for the 2017 season.

Head Coach Craig Starcevich’s team will include three assistants – David Lake, Brent Staker and Daniel Merrett.

Lake, who has coached Mt Gravatt and Morningside in the QAFL, will join the Women’s team as a midfield coach.

“I find that the women are willing to learn and really want to know about the game and get better at it. I find that quite refreshing,” said Lake.

Staker and Merrett, both former Lions, will return to the Club as forward and backline coaches.

Staker retired in 2015 and has since played for the Western Magpies in the QAFL along with coaching the Australian Masters team in England and Ireland.

“It’s something that’s very new (the competition),” said Staker.

“It’s obviously a blank canvas with the women and it’s untested. There is lots to look forward to, I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead with these girls who are eager to learn.”

Merrett retired from football in August after 14 seasons with the Lions. He will be in charge of the backline.

“I’m really excited to be back at the Club. Craig (Starcevich) and I go back a long way. He was my first strength and conditioning coach back in 2003. Freshly out of the game and to move into coaching, I can’t wait to coach them.”
