Ruck and Midfield Assistant Coach Ben Hudson says the Lions will learn from the five-point loss to the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon.

“We had a real good opportunity to win it. That composure in the final parts of the game, certainly the last five minutes we take from the last quarter. We learn from that and we implement that the next time we have the opportunity,” Hudson told lions.com.au.

The coaching staff were happy with the amount of entries into the forward 50, with 60 recorded for the afternoon.

“It was one of the many things that we were glad that came out of the game. Probably the next step is scoring from those and being more efficient,” Hudson said.

The Lions are currently sitting second in the league for clearance differential.

“It’s been a focus along with our contested ball element. It’s probably showing in the games we’ve played thus far,” Hudson said.

“It starts from those guys in the midfield.”

Hudson also praised Lions ruckman Stefan Martin for his consistent performances so far in 2018.

“The challenge is we probably need a few more guys like that."

“He certainly puts in the work in his preparation and his diligence and the one percenters to get himself right.”

Along with Martin, some of the Lions’ youngest cubs were the strongest performers on Saturday night.

Jarrod Berry and Hugh McCluggage both had career highs for disposals.

Hudson recognised their strong performance but was also quick to point out other young players stepping up.

“Along with them, Witherden, Harris and Hippy [all impressed], they’re all in that 20-30 game bracket now, learning from every game. The positive is they’re really progressing and taking something from every game,” he said.
