Brisbane Lions v Hawthorn Hawks
12.40pm, Sunday 3 March
Moreton Bay Sports Complex, Burpengary

Ruck Coach Ben Hudson, who will take the reins in the Brisbane Lions first JLT Community Series game this weekend, said the 26-men selected have earned their spot during the pre-season.

“The team’s been based on performances throughout the pre-season,” he told lions.com.au.

“With only two games in the JLT Community Series, we want to have a strong hit out this weekend.”

Ely Smith is the only draftee who will get a run this weekend, after he was named on the extended bench.

“Ely Smith has shown that his contest is his strength,” Hudson said.

“Any chance he has to play against AFL competition will hold him in really good stead.”

Second year player Connor Ballenden will have his first chance at the elite level. The 19-year-old is aiming to make his debut in 2019.

“Connor Ballenden has had a strong second year pre-season,” he said.

“His fitness and work ethic has improved which has granted him an opportunity.”

Joining Ballenden on the extended bench are Ryan Bastinac, Mitch Robinson, Lewis Taylor, Zac Bailey, Rhys Mathieson and Brandon Starcevich.

Nick Robertson, Cedric Cox, Mitch Hinge and Tom Cutler have been named as emergencies.

Gates to the match open 11am AEST on Sunday, 3 March.
