Introduction

The Brisbane Lions’ midfield has received a major boost with the acquisition of Lachie Neale on the final day of the 2018 NAB AFL Trade Period.

After being selected at Pick No. 58 in the 2011 Draft, Lachie Neale has quickly become one of the leagues most damaging midfielders.  Neale is the only player in the AFL under the age of 30 who has had 3000 possessions in the last five years, including a minimum 500 possessions each year, plus 50 Brownlow Medal votes, 50 games of 30 possessions or more, and five games of 40 possessions or more.

Background

  • Raised in the small country town of Naracoorte in South Australia, 300 kilometres south-east of Adelaide.
  • Started playing football for Kybybolite in 2004 as a 10 year old. He kicked 8 goals for the year and his team won the under 14 KNTFL premiership.
  • He played his junior football for the Kybybolite Football Club and then the Glenelg Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL)
  • He represented South Australia at the 2011 AFL Under 18 Championships.
  • Neale made his debut in round 4 of the 2012 AFL season against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium as the substitute.
  • In 2013, in just his 23rd game, Neale became the first footballer from the area of Naracoorte to play in an AFL grand final since Carlton’s Andrew McKay, who grew up playing for Lucindale.
  • Neale's 2016 season with Fremantle was rewarded with the Doig Medal as the club best and fairest.
  • At the end of the 2018 season, Neale requested a trade to Brisbane.

Season by Season

Season by Season

  • In 2018, Lachie Neale won ABC Perth's Geoff Christian Medal, joining the likes of Paul Hasleby, Matthew Pavlich, Daniel Kerr, Matthew Priddis and Nat Fyfe as the only players to have earned the honour twice. The Geoff Christian Medal is awarded by ABC Perth for the best Fremantle or West Coast player during the season.
  • Neale's season was highlighted by a career-best 667 disposals and a spot in the 40-man All-Australian squad.
  • Was drafted to the Brisbane Lions on the final day of the 2018 NAB AFL Draft.
