INTRODUCTION

Nicholas Hayes is a clever and courageous footballer who has proven deadly in front of goals when playing up forward. His football smarts and creativity also makes him capable of developing into a future AFL midfielder.

BACKGROUND

• Nicholas Hayes cuaght the eye of Lions recruiters after booting 74 goals in half a season with Sacred Heart Boarding School - the same school once attended by future teammate Jack Redden - in country South Australia.

• He later went on to play 13 matches with Woodville West-Torrens U18s in the SANFL where he averaged 16.3 disposals, 6.5 marks, and 1.5 goals per game.

• In the U18 SANFL Grand Final, Hayes kicked what turned out to be the match-winning, and premiership-winning, goal.

• After generating some interest from AFL clubs, he was invited to attend the South Australian State screening (conducted for those who didn't attend the official AFL Combine).

• The Lions reluctantly decided to pass on Hayes in the 2012 AFL National Draft, but pounced early in the following month's Rookie Draft (with Pick No.6) when he was still available.

Woodville-West Torrens Talent Manager Shane Grimm Says

"Nick went to the state screening after coming to us this year from our country zone. He is a Sacred Heart College boy who is a tall forward and is one of the best contested marks we’ve had at our club in the under 18s in four or five years. He just doesn’t drop anything and is extremely smart and clever."

Lions National Talent Manager Rob Kerr Says
"Nick is a very clever and courageous footballer who our South Australian scouts identified early in the year and showed great improvement when playing SANFL U18s."

"As a player, he’s a forward who should graduate into someone who can play through the midfield."

"We rated him so highly that we almost took him with our third round draft choice at the National Draft - so are delighted that we have managed to have our cake and eat it too."

Season by Season

Season by Season

• Sharing a home with felloow 2012 draftees, Marco Paparone, Sam Mayes, and Michael Close, it didn't take Hayes long to adapt to the Brisbane lifestyle and start loving his new 'home'.

• As expected, he spent the bulk of his debut season developing with the Lions Reserves side in the NEAFL, and impressed Reserves Coach Leigh Harding in the process: "He lacks physical presence, but that size will come with more pre-seasons under his belt. But as far as on-field smarts go, he is quite advanced," Harding told lions.com.au.

Among his greatest thrills was lining up alongside Simon Black for three matches when the three-time premiership midfielder was regaining fitness after a lengthy stint on the sidelines with a groin injury.

• One of Hayes' finest performances came in the ANCAZ Day match against Gold Coast in Mackay, when he lined up with Black in the midfield, and collected the ball at will.

• He also received a late call-up to represent the NEAFL's representative side against the best of the SANFL back home in West Adelaide.

• Unfortunately Hayes' first AFL season ended prematurely, with a foot stress fracture keeping him out of action for the final six weeks. It meant he was forced to watch on from the sidelines as some of his Reserves teammates shared in the joy of a second straight NEAFL premiership.
