Introduction

Patrick Wearden is natural forward who can kick the ball long, take a strong mark, and is dangerous in front of goal. He also reads the game well and shows great athleticism (good repeat speed) which could see him potentially develop into a future midfielder.

Background

• Country Victorian Patrick Wearden played the majority of his junior football with Kyabram FC and joined the Murray Bushrangers' TAC Cup side as a 14 year-old.

• He played nine games and kicked eight goals as an under-age player with the Bushrangers in 2010, and went on to play a further 14 matches, kick eight goals and average over 17 disposals per game in 2011.

• Throughout his final season with the 'Bushies', Wearden was also selected -  under the '23rd man' rule - to play three matches with Collingwood's VFL affiliate side.

• His form attracted enough interest from prospective recruiters to be invited to the 2011 AFL Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium.

• Wearden's hard work paid off in November 2011 when the Brisbane Lions selected him with their fourth selection (Pick No.47 overall) at the AFL National Draft in Sydney.

Season by Season

Season by Season

• Wearden approached his second AFL season with an eye to hopefully get his first taste of senior AFL action.

• He couldn't quite break himself into the Lions' pre-season premiership-winning side, so continued his development with the Reserves in the NEAFL.

• In just the third round of the NEAFL season at Metricon Stadium, he copped a reckless fist to the face from his Gold Coast opponent, and suffered a broken jaw. Such was the seriousness of the incident, he had to be operated on that night on the Gold Coast.

• The injury sidelined Wearden for the next three months, before he returned in Round 14.

• Wearden was played in a variety of roles in the back half of the season, but mostly across half-back. He went on to prove a key member of the Reserves' second straight NEAFL premiership win over Aspley.

• Wearden spent his first few months at the Lions with his head down, working hard to build his body size, strength and endurance to that of AFL level.

• He was a solid contributor to the Lions’ Reserves throughout the year, and continually improved each week in a variety of roles, but predominantly across half back.

• Wearden’s season highlight was the Round 17 game against the Gold Coast, where he covered 15km of ground, collected 24 disposals, and took nine marks.

• Wearden went on to be a part of the Lions’ Reserves’ NEAFL Premierships in just his first year in the AFL system.

• His consistent improvement did not go unnoticed by the coaches, and fans would no doubt be excited to see this promising youngster make his senior AFL debut in 2013.
