Six Lions pulled on the maroon, blue and gold for the first time this season. We look back at how our AFLW and Club debutants went in 2022. 

Phoebe Monahan

Club Debut: Round 1, 2022 
Drafted: Signed as delisted free agent, 2021 

If you were asked to describe Phoebe Monahan as a player prior to her arrival at the Lions, words like ‘reliable’, ‘experienced’, ‘smart’ would come to mind. 

And if you were asked to describe her after 12 games as a Lions, we reckon you’d be choosing some pretty similar words.  

In her fifth AFLW season and at her third Club, Monahan’s dedication and drive shone through as she asserted her position as a hardworking member of the Lions’ defensive unit. 

Slotting right into the backline alongside Bre Koenen, Shannon Campbell, Nat Grider and Indy Tahau, Monahan put together her most consistent and prolific season yet.

Phoebe Monahan has worked hard to earn her spot in the round 1 side for season 2022. This will be Phoebe's first game as a Lion.

Zimmorlei ‘Zimmie’ Farquharson

AFLW Debut: Round 3, 2022 v Carlton 
Drafted: No.8, 2020 NAB AFL Women’s Draft 

There were few debuts this season more dazzling than that of Zimmie Farquharson. 

12 disposals, five marks, one goal and a NAB Rising Star nomination saw Farquharson launch her AFLW career with a bang. 

After waiting patiently on the sidelines for two seasons, the Dalby product finally got her chance in Round 3 against Carlton with a performance that had the competition taking notice. 

The 20-year-old made the most of the opportunity to hold onto her position in the Lions forward line through to the end of the season, only missing one game (Round 6 against St Kilda) due to illness. 

Farquharson finished the season with seven goals from ten games, with the 2022 season just the beginning for the skilful half forward.

AFLW Rd 3 Rising Star: Zimmorlei Farquahrson

Zimmorlei Farquahrson defiantly made a good first impression in the AFLW against Carlton on Tuesday night and is rewarded with the Round 3 rising star award.

Ruby Svarc 

AFLW Debut: Round 3, 2022 v Carlton 
Drafted: No.38, 2020 NAB AFL Women’s Draft 

Ruby Svarc’s hard work and patience paid off in 2022 when the speedy winger was handed her chance to make her AFLW debut against Carlton. 

The versatile speedster made the most of her opportunity, coming into the team and holding her position for most of the season, despite not always getting to play her preferred role on the wing. 

Her best performance came in Round 8 against West Coast where she gathered a career-high 11 disposals and gained 338 metres.

Lucinda Pullar 

AFLW Debut: Round 5, 2022 v Collingwood 
Drafted: No.58, 2021 NAB AFL Women’s Draft 

A professional in every sense of the word, it was little surprise to her teammates that Lulu Pullar slotted right into the Lions’ defensive half from the moment she stepped on the field. 

Making her debut in Round 5 against Collingwood, Pullar quickly adopted the quiet, hardworking attitude of her backline comrades, improving week after week.  

The 23-year-old became a mainstay of the Lions defensive unit in the second half of the season, with her best game coming in the Preliminary Final against Melbourne where she gathered 10 disposals, six intercepts and five tackles.

We caught up with LuLu Pullar after her debut as a Brisbane Lion.

Luka Yoshida-Martin 

AFLW Debut: Round 6, 2022 v St Kilda 
Drafted: No.53, 2021 NAB AFL Women’s Draft 

A quiet and reserved youngster, Luka Yoshida-Martin is anything but when she’s on the footy field. 

Drafted ahead of the 2022 season, the cross-code forward was handed her first opportunity to pull on the Lions guernsey in Round 6 and didn’t disappoint on debut. 

With her parents watching on in the stands, Yoshida-Martin’s X-Factor was on show as she kicked her first goal in her first game and put the Lions’ path to victory against St Kilda. 

Despite only playing two games this season, the 21-year-old managed to show glimmers of her natural goal sense and ability to create pressure around the ball, making her an exciting prospect for Lions’ fans as she continues to develop as a player.

Luka Yoshida-Martin makes the most of her first AFLW game with a much-needed goal for the Lions

Maggie Harmer 

AFLW Debut: Qualifying Final, 2022 v Melbourne 
Drafted: No.18 2021 NAB AFL Women’s Draft 

The only AFLW player to make her debut in a Final this season, Maggie Harmer stepped up to the challenge and showed plenty of spark. 

You wouldn’t have known by her performance that Harmer only found out about her debut in the hours prior to the elimination Final, with Indy Tahau a late out with illness. 

The Maroochydore product gathered six touches, five kicks and two marks in her first and only AFLW match this season. 

Harmer had worked hard to be in a position to make her debut late in the season after being sidelined for the better part of the 2022 season with a high ankle sprain. 

Yet to Debut 

Only two Lions on the 2022 list remain yet to debut; Bella Smith (No.35 2021 NAB AFL Women’s Draft) and Mikayla Pauga (No.46 2021 AFL Women’s Draft).  

The pair have shown plenty of promise, both performing well in their respective QWAFL teams (Maroochydore and Bond University) throughout recent months.
