The Brisbane Lions have gone ‘all in’ on young talent in a re-signing bonanza, with Henry Smith, Jimmy Tunstill, Darcy Wilmot and Kalin Lane all inking new deals.

Smith and Lane have both extended to remain at the Lions until the end of 2024.

First-year players Tunstill and Wilmot added a further two years onto their original two-year contracts to commit until the end of 2025.

Since coming on board at the Lions in last year’s mid-season draft, 20-year-old Lane has impressed in the VFL with his consistent growth and development in the ruck.

“I’ve worked pretty hard over the last few months starting back in pre-season, so to get the reward and know that the team backs me in for another two years is really exciting,” Lane said.

“The first impression coming into the Club, you can just tell that we breed success here with the standards and accountability and it’s something that you want to be a part of.

“It makes it really exciting to know that you have a future here.”

South Australian product Smith has also been honing his craft in the VFL over the past two seasons. Building his game and size, the 19-year-old has been continually developing his game as a consistent contributor on field, with his hard work rewarded with a new deal.

First-year players Wilmot and Tunstill have both had flying starts to their careers at the Lions with solid performances in the VFL this season.

Tunstill’s smart ball use and competitive nature has seen him get plenty of ball as a versatile and hard-running midfielder, while Wilmot has shown plenty of energy and promise in the Lions’ defensive unit.

“I just love it at Brisbane,” Wilmot said.

“The culture here is just unreal and I turn up every day just loving what I’m doing. Why wouldn’t I want to be here?

“I’ve really enjoyed playing with the boys, especially in the VFL this season. Hopefully I can get my opportunity soon in the AFL but in the meantime, I’m just going to keep working hard.”

Although the quartet are yet to make their AFL debuts, Brisbane Lions GM of Football Danny Daly said that the Club has been impressed by the growth and development of the four young Lions.

“It’s exciting to have four of our younger players recommit to the Club,”

“We’ve seen some really strong growth and development from each of them since coming on board at the Lions.

“They bring plenty of excitement and energy around the group, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they continue to progress and develop over the next few years.”
