The Brisbane Lions Academy had three players selected in the Allies squad to take part in the 2023 AFL National Under-18 Boys Championships.

Lions Academy captain Brad McDonald, Patrick Snell and Sam Marshall have been picked to take on some of the best talent from around the country.

Named in the backline for first game, Snell was part of a 16-point victory to the Allies who kicked off their Championship campaign against South Australia on Sunday.

Academy coach Mitch Hahn knows that this selection gives the players an opportunity to showcase their football abilities on a national stage.

“I’m really proud of all three of these boys and it’s a testament to the hard work they’ve put in their young careers,” he said.

“Brad plays as a tall defender for us, he’s got great pace, power and athleticism which allows him to close space quickly to spoil of intercept mark.

“He travels a long way to train coming from the Maroochydore Football Club which is a credit to his commitment to be the best player he can.

“It’s not all about football though, Brad is someone who really excels at school and being able to succeed and balance both at a high level is commendable.”

Snell is another key position player who has been used at both ends of the ground this year.

“Snelly is big body for us someone we use as a bit of a swingman in defence and attack,” Hahn said.

“His game is built of competitiveness and controlled aggression and you aid to that his big left boot he’s an exciting player for us.

“Sam Marshall has been one of our most consistent performers this year as an inside/outside midfielder.

“He’s from the Sunshine Coast but moved to Melbourne Grammar for schooling and football which shows his want to be the best he can be.

“A good decision maker with neat skills and he can run all day which is such an asset for us.

Marshall has averaged around 30 disposals through first few games of the Academy season.

Lions coach Drew Mitchell will also feature as part of the coaching panel for 2023.

The 2023 AFL National Championships – U18 Boys will be played across Australia throughout June and July, featuring the Allies, South Australia, Victoria Country, Victoria Metro and Western Australia.

The Allies take on Western Australia on Sunday June 11 at Thebarton Oval from 12:05pm.

The AFL National Championships are the highest level of state and territory representative football, as part of the AFL’s Talent Pathway Program.
