The Brisbane Lions AFLW side will enter Round 1 full of confidence following their 13-point win over Sydney at Brighton Homes Arena in their last official practice game.

The Lions booted three goals in the first quarter to open up a lead which wouldn’t be lost, running out 7.7 (49) to 5.6 (36) winners.

Two majors to Sophie Conway to go along with her 18 touches and seven tackles, saw the two-time All-Australian showcase some early season form.

Lions skipper Bre Koenen, who played a large role in the midfield throughout the contest collected 21 possessions, six marks and nine tackles in a strong outing.

Dakota Davidson booted the Lions first goal with Ally Anderson and Courtney Hodder joining suit as the Lions held a 12-point quarter time lead.

Winger Orla O’Dwyer gathered 18 disposals as the Lions midfield took ascendency early in the game with Anderson collecting 17 touches.

Conway booted her first in the second term as the wind began to wreak havoc on the game making ball movement and goal kicking difficult as the Lions led by 13 points at the main break.

Lily Postlethwaite and Jade Ellenger enjoyed strong performances as they both played key roles off half back.

Belle Dawes ignited the Lions after half-time bursting through a forward 50 stoppage and handballing over the top to allow Ruby Svarc to walk into an open goal.

Sydney responded strongly in both the second and third term, running through the middle of the ground, booting a goal shortly after to keep the margin to 13 points.

Two goals in the final term saw the Lions sew up the win as 2023 draftee Rania Crozier put the finishing touches on the 13-point win.

The Lions will now turn their attention to Round 1 of the 2025 NAB AFLW Season where they take on Hawthorn at Brighton Homes Arena from 12:40pm on August 17.
